Although the entrance to the theatre may not be immediately visible after entering the gates, it’s directly ahead, not up the pathway to the right. The theatre impresses with its vast size and remarkable preservation.
Climb the steps to fully appreciate the theatre’s grandeur, which could accommodate up to 9,000 spectators. Designed in the traditional Greek manner with a seating area carved into the hillside, the theatre also features a Roman stage and facade, commissioned by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD) and designed by the architect Zenon.
Beyond the theatre, as you continue ascending the steps and pathway, the ruins of an ancient stadium appear on your right. Though now a shadow of its former self, the remnants of seating and arches hint at the thrilling athletic competitions and Roman spectacles once held here.
Presently, Aspendos is a small town attracting many visitors for its historic significance. In antiquity, it was a bustling trading center with a river that made it accessible from the sea.
