Travertines of Pamukkale – A Natural Wonderland

In the southwest of Turkey, in the province of Denizli, you’ll find one of the most breathtaking natural wonders – the thermal springs of Pamukkale. The name “Pamukkale” means “Cotton Castle,” and once you see it, you’ll understand why! From a distance, the landscape looks like a dreamy field of cotton, with bright white terraces filled with dazzling turquoise water. It’s so surreal that you might have to pinch yourself to believe it’s real!

So, how did this magical place come to be? The thermal water, rich in calcium, flows down a 70-meter-high hillside. As the water cools, calcium carbonate is deposited, forming a soft white substance that hardens over time. This process takes decades, creating the stunning travertine terraces we see today.

As you explore, you can walk barefoot through this mesmerizing landscape, take in the breathtaking views, and even dip your feet in the natural pools. Additionally, don’t forget to bring your camera – the photos you take here will be a beautiful reminder of your trip for years to come!

Exploring the Ancient City of Hierapolis

After marveling at the white travertine pools, your journey continues to the ancient city of Hierapolis, located right next to Pamukkale. This fascinating city was founded in the 2nd century BC by the Attalid kings and became a famous healing center in ancient times. Wealthy citizens and nobles from all over came here to relax and improve their health.

At its peak, Hierapolis was a grand city with magnificent baths, temples, and other impressive buildings. Many of these structures have survived to this day, giving you a glimpse into its glorious past.

Among its highlights, two must-see sites in Hierapolis are the Necropolis and the Temple of Apollo. The Temple of Apollo was the city’s largest structure, though it suffered damage from earthquakes. Even today, you can see its stone steps, ruins of columns, and grand archways. The Necropolis, one of the best-preserved ancient cemeteries, holds over 2,000 tombs where aristocrats were buried. Walking along its stone-paved roads, you’ll uncover fascinating stories about the people who lived here centuries ago.

Cleopatra’s Pool – A Legendary Thermal Bath

Next on your journey is Cleopatra’s Pool, a stunning natural hot spring located near the travertines. This large, warm mineral pool is famous not only for its beauty but also for its healing properties. The pool’s floor is covered with the remains of ancient columns, which fell during an earthquake centuries ago. According to legend, Queen Cleopatra herself once bathed in these very waters!

Today, anyone can take a dip in this legendary pool and enjoy its relaxing, mineral-rich waters, which are said to be great for the heart, digestion, and joints. Imagine floating in warm, crystal-clear water, surrounded by history and nature – it’s an experience like no other!

If you need a break after your swim, there are cozy cafés and souvenir shops nearby where you can sit back, relax, and take in the peaceful surroundings.

An Unforgettable Experience

Pamukkale and Hierapolis are truly must-visit destinations for anyone traveling to Turkey. Whether you’re admiring the dazzling white terraces, exploring the ruins of an ancient city, or soaking in a legendary hot spring, this trip will leave you with unforgettable memories. So, bring your swimsuit, your camera, and your sense of adventure – you’re in for a magical experience!

This was a wonderfully lovely tour where we had plenty of free time at Hierapolis to visit the Pamukkale pools, swim in the Cleopatra Pool, and explore the ruins. Ali, our tour guide, was outstanding; he provided a wealth of knowledge and was incredibly amiable. I heartily encourage everyone who does this excursion.

Anybody visiting Turkey should make sure to visit Pamukkale. Beautiful top views and refreshing water. It’s a shame that there wasn’t enough time to explore the area and unwind in the waters. Although the trip there is difficult, once you arrive, all of the suffering will be forgotten. What a spot to remember of Turkey.

Yes, it’s a long day, but if you’re in Antalya, you shouldn’t miss this tour! The drive went by faster than expected since we had several stops for beautiful views. In Pamukkale itself, it was simply breathtaking. The warm water in the natural pools was a delight, and I have rarely seen such a magical place. Overall, a fantastic experience that I highly recommend!

It was such a great day! I was picked up on time by our tour driver. Our guide was very informative. He told us so many things about Turkish history, culture, and lifestyle. I learned a lot from him. The sites we visited were amazing. I regret not being informed (or I missed the information) to bring my swimwear for the ancient pool. Anyway, I enjoyed the Cotton Castles. I wish they would preserve them.

I love discovering both impressive landscapes and historical sites, and this tour offered both in perfection! The white terraces looked like a snow wonder, yet the warm water was a pleasant surprise. I have rarely seen something so unique! The ancient ruins were also fascinating, especially the necropolis with its massive sarcophagi. Our guide was very friendly and answered all our questions. All in all, an unforgettable trip!
